By this union, Maria became pregnant. Her mother Eliza moved the family to Philadelphia, Maria was kept in confinement by her mother until the child's birth. Then a doctor, who was an old family friend oversaw the birth and was given the child to adopt out. As the story is related, Woodbury never knew this child existed.
