John took a leave of absence from his position in Seattle to become an Army captain, and left the editorial direction of the paper in his wife's hands.  But her policies did not square with those of the interim publisher named by Hearst.  So at this time Anna came to the White House once more, handling some of the correspondence and hostess functions.  John meanwhile was transferred from Italy to the "Civil Affairs Division at the Pentagon Building".
