As a young man he came to San Juan Bautista, a tiny place in [[Monterey County, California]], applied and was accepted as a teacher.  While there he married Miss Clemina French and they had two surviving children: Edwin and Grace.  His first wife died by 1877.

Now Superintendent of Schools for Monterey County, California, he married secondly to Martha Young (b 1844) a native of Hancock County, Virginia (now West Virginia), and they had at least two more surviving children: Laura and William.
