George William Kincaid

George William "Billy" Kincaid was born 11 Feb 1882 in Perry County, Arkansas, the son of James B Kincaid by his wife Frankie Coats. (He states his own birthplace, on his WWII Draft Registration Card in 1942.) In 1900, George is enumerated living with his parents in Wilson Township, Yell County, Arkansas. (Yell County is just West of Perry County (see Arkansas County Formation Maps)

On 12 Sep 1902, while residing in Pontoon, Yell County, Arkansas, as "Billie Kincade" he took out a license to marry "Miss Florence Cobb". They married however in Conway County, by a Justice of the Peace. The part of Yell County where Pontoon was, sticks into Conway County, so perhaps it was closer to find a JP in Conway. Also the 1910 census proves that she was born Florence Roper and at the time of her marriage to Billie, was either a widow or divorcee, with one young son Emmett Cobb (b 1899) from her 1898 Yell County marriage to Robert H Cobb. (See Emmett on OneWorldTree here stating that he was born in "Fowler, Yell County")

George and Florence lived in Yell County until at least 1910, but by 1918 they are living at Atkins, in Pope County, Arkansas. They are enumerated in 1920 in the township of Lee, Pope County. George and Florence had about eight children in Arkansas, where she died in 1922. My client tells me that around this time, early 1920s, George William "Billie" Kincaid shot and killed 2 or 3 persons in his barn, on his property. He spent some time in prison for this.

He moved to Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas where he is living in 1942, but later moved to Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California where he died on 24 Apr 1960.

Margaret Florence Roper

Margaret Florence Roper was born 12 Oct 1876 in Stone County, Arkansas, the daughter of George Washington Roper and his wife Mary Louisa James.

On 22 May 1898, in Yell County, Arkansas, Margaret Florence Roper married her first husband "R H Cobb". They had one surviving child, Ollie Emmett Cobb born 16 Feb 1899 at Fowler, Yell County, Arkansas. Ollie married, and later died in 1973 at Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.

On 12 Sep 1902, in Pontoon, Yell County, Arkansas, Mrs Margaret Florence Cobb married her second husband George William Kincaid. They had eight children in Conway, Yell and Faulkner Counties.

Margaret Florence died 26 Oct 1922 at Atkins, Pope County, Arkansas. Her last husband George, outlived her by 38 years dying 24 Apr 1960 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.

James B Kincaid

James B Kincaid was born in Newton County, Arkansas, the son of Sherrod Kincaid and his wife Jane Hughes. (His birth place as "Newton County" is specified on his son James' WW1 Draft Registration Card.) James age is variously given as 2 in 1860, 45 in 1900 and 50 in 1910.

My client states that James was taken to the Indian Territory, "when he was nine years old, by his uncles Hughes and McGehee" and raised there, but later returned to Yell County, or that area, where he married Frankie Coats.

He is probably the same person who on 15 May 1877 completed a Homestead Entry, as "James Kincaid" for NENE S5-T6N-R16W in Conway County. (A few years later, in the same section on 10 May 1882 a "John Kincade", probably his brother John, files his homestead for the S1/2SE. His brother John was living in 1870 in Taney County, Missouri with Houston Hughes.)

About 1879/80 James B Kincaid married Frankie Coats probably in Arkansas. ("Thirty-one years ago" per the 1910 census.) They had eight children, all born in Arkansas:

  1. George William Kincaid born 11 Feb 1882 in Perry County, Arkansas;
  2. Maudie Kincaid 1885;
  3. Eliza Kincaid 1887;
  4. Charles Otis "Charlie" Kincaid born 7 Apr 1889 at "Atkins, Arkansas" which is in Pope County (see his WW1 Draft Card here for the proof). His entry at OneWorldTree claims he was born at "Carden Bottoms, Yell County". He married May, her maiden name is said-to-be Underwood. They married by 1910. (See them here on the 1910 Census of Galla Rock, Yell County, Arkansas.) Charlie and Mary had three children by 1918 when he was employed as a farmer by "J B Kincaid of Pyatt Township, Pulaski County" [probably his father]; He is living in 1918 at "Wilder, Arkansas". He is enumerated in 1920 at Lee, Pope County, living next-door to his brother George. Charles' children, at that time are Zada, Lettie, Anna May and Hazel; Charlie moved to California where he died in 1950 (see California Death Index here)
  5. Ora Elvira Kincaid born 1892, married Dave Franks and they had a daughter Frankie J Franks born in 1909;
  6. Mary Ethel Kincaid 1896;
  7. James Andrew Jackson Kincaid born 12 Nov 1898 in Yell County, Arkansas (see his WW1 Draft Card here as "James Andrew Jackson Kincaid"). He was living in 1918 in Faulkner County, employed by R E Dent. He at that time, lists his nearest relative as "James Kincaid of Rt 4, Box 99, Atkins, [Pope County], Arkansas"

In the 1900 census, the family is enumerated at Wilson Township, Yell County, Arkansas; and are still there in 1910. He is probably the "J B Kincaid of Pyatt Township, Pulaski County" who is the employer of his son Charles Otis Kincaid in 1918, but note that his other apparent son, lists his father [apparently] that same year as living at Atkins, Pope County.

Frankie J Coats

Frank J "Frankie" Coats was born Mar 1858 in Arkansas, possibly in or near Dardanelle, Yell County, Arkansas; where she and her sister are living with their aunt and uncle in the 1870 Census. The 1900 census states that both her parents were born in Tennessee.

Sherrod Kincaid

Sherrod Kincaid was born about 1821 in Tennessee. His parents may have been Joseph Kincaid whose wife may have been the Elizabeth Kincaid, living next door to Sherrod in 1850. If Joseph was his father, then Sherrod accompanied his parents when they moved to Alabama sometime before 1835 and then again when the family relocated to Arkansas about 1842/3. Wherever they lived in 1842, it does not appear to have been in Franklin County. I have transcribed the 1845 Franklin County Arkansas Tax List and I provided an Every-Name Index to it here and there are no Kincaid's or variant on it. I also transcribed the First Probate Court Minutes book and I provided an Every-Name Index to it here which shows no Kincaid or variant.

Sherrod was married twice, to two sisters. He appears in the 1850 Census of Boston Township, Franklin County, Arkansas with his first wife Eliza Hughes who is 25 and born in Alabama, along with three children: Joseph 1846, William 1847, and George A 1848, all the children born in Arkansas. They are living next-door to an Elizabeth Kincaid who would appear to be a widow, and of a good age to be Sherrod's mother.

Eliza Hughes died between 1850 and 1853. On 16 Jan 1853, in Franklin County, Arkansas, Sherrod married her sister Jane Hughes also born in Alabama. They do not give their ages on the marriage license. Sherrod was next enumerated in the 1860 census, where Jane is then listed as 26 years old.

On 1 Sep 1857, "John Hughes of Newton County" purchased 40 acres for cash, at SWNE S24-T13N-R22W in Newton County, Arkansas. (see Patent Image) But from 1857 to 1861, Sherrod A Kinkade (Kincade, and Kingcade) was paying the taxes on the land. My client states, referring to John Hughes "...I have a suspicion he had something to do with [Sherrod's] murder in 1867." Sherrod and Jane were both supposed to have been killed in 1867.
