Dorothy Emma Howell was born in or around Chicago, Cook County, Illinois in June, 1919, the daughter of Edwin John Howell and his wife Della Murray.  Her parents divorced (this article states in 1920, while this one states 1927), and Della married secondly in 1933 to a Chicago businessman Max Rosenburg.  It was perhaps about this time that Dorothy and her younger sister, Isabelle (b. 1924) went to live with their grandparents in the Los Angeles area.

Wikipedia states that "... through her years in high school, she lived with her paternal grandparents in the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra, California. After graduating from Alhambra High School in 1937, she moved to Chicago where she married Hugh Ellsworth Rodham in 1942."

Wikipedia states that "... through her years in high school, she lived with her paternal grandparents in the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra, California." Another article however states that she moved out of her grandparents home when she was 14 to become a nanny, and through her high school years, she lived in her own apartment. Wikipedia goes on to say that "after graduating from Alhambra High School in 1937, she moved to Chicago where she married Hugh Ellsworth Rodham in 1942."

The family then lived in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge, Illinois.  When her husband died, an article in the News Record of North Hills, Pennsylvania which was mainly about Hillary, reprinted this quote from Dorothy:<blockquote> "There must have been 40 or 50 children within a four-block radius of our house and within four years of Hillary's age," the first lady's mother, Dorothy Rodham, told The Washington Post in January.  "They were all together, all the time, a big extended family.  There were more boys than girls, lot of playing and competition."</blockquote>
+
Dorothy's Wikipedia article states that Dorothy moved back to Chicago "...for a failed reunion with her mother."  Another article states that her mother wanted her to return to Chicago, but to work as her housekeeper.  Dorothy met Hugh Rodham in 1937 when she applied for a secretarial job at the Columbia Lace Company, where he sold curtains as a traveling salesman. It wasn't until four or five years later that he and Dorothy married, probably in or near Chicago.  They were subsequently to have three children.

Hannah Jones was born about 1882/3 in Pennsylvania.  She married Hugh Simpson Rodham about 1906 probably in Pennsylvania, possibly in Scranton.  They lived in Scranton.  She was evidently still living as late as when Hugh filled out his WWII Draft Registration Card, but there only named as "Mrs Hugh Rodham".

Edwin John Howell, Jr
Lived in Chicago around 1918/9 when his daughter was born.
+
Edwin John Howell, Jr. was born 20 Jan 1897 in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois, the son of Edwin John Howell and his wife, Emma Monk.
 +

 +
Edwin Jr moved to Chicago, and married secondly Della Murray about 1918. They lived in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois when their daughter Dorothy was born there in June 1919.
 +

 +
Edwin and Della divorced, probably in Chicago &mdash; (this article states in 1920, while this one states 1927).  It was perhaps about this time that Dorothy and her younger sister, Isabelle (b. 1924) went to live with their grandparents in the Los Angeles area, one article stating that this was "when she was 8 years old".
 +

 +
Edwin Howell is probably that same one who died in 1946 in San Francisco, California.

Della Murray was born in Illinois in 1902/1903.  She married Edwin John Howell Jr about 1918, probably in or near Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, where they were living when their daughter Dorothy was born there in June 1919. "Dorothy's mother, Della Murray, was only fifteen when Dorothy was born and Dorothy's fireman father Edwin John Howell Jr was seventeen." ("Hillary Rodham Clinton: Profile of a Leading Democrat")
 +
 +
 +
This article states that her second marriage was to "...a Jew, a Chicago businessman named Max Rosenberg." It does appear likely however, that her second marriage was to a Mr Chrysler, sometime before 1930, from whom she apparently also divorced.  Her marriage to Rosenberg took place in 1933.
 +
 +
William Addams Reitwiesner, in his "Hillary Rodham Clinton" write-up states that Della died in Miami, Florida, in 1960.

"26 -- obituary in The Elgin Daily News 16 Jul 1916, p. 5: "John Monk, former town collector and for nearly forty years a cigar maker in this city, died at the Old Soldiers' Home, Danville, Ill., yesterday afternoon. His body will be brought to this city tonight. He had been ill for nearly two years. He gave up active work three years ago. Some time following his election as town collector a year ago, he was taken to St. Joseph's hospital for treatment. Three months ago he returned to the soldiers' home. Mr. Monk was well known in Elgin, especially among older residents. He was a veteran of the civil war and for many years a familiar figure at the reunions of the 'boys of '61'. Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, John Monk, of South Elgin, and two daughters, Mrs. Ed Howell and Mrs. Anno Andresen of this city. He also has several brothers."
