Born in 1896, the son of Dr Weller van Hook, a surgeon in Chicago, and the General Secretary of the Theosophical Society in the United States.  Hubert was selected by Leadbetter "...while on a lecture tour of American a few years before..." (Lutyens, "Amakening", Discus p 12) as the vehicle for the coming World Teacher, called Lord Maitreya by the Theosophists.

Leadbetter later discovered Krishnamurti.  This "discovery" created a bit of a problem over the conflicting claims. Hubert's mother left his father and brought Hubert to India for special training. After Krishna was found, Hubert was soon dropped."(Lutyens, "Awakening", Discus p 12)
