William Riley Ivey was born 7 May 1838 in Missouri, but by 1845 the family had moved to [[Franklin County, Arkansas]] where his father James appears on the Tax Rolls that year.  On 28 Aug 1856, William married Mary Frances Snodgrass (1839-76), daughter of [[Isaac_Snodgrass (d. 1850)|Isaac Snodgrass]] and they had ten children.  Of their male children, only James married and he is not known to have had any children.
