In 1908 he was living in Cordova, Alaska.  That year he and his 36-year-old girlfriend Kitty O'Brien moved to Juneau.

Born [[Jan 28]], 1890 in Seattle, King County, Washington, to Benjamin "Ben" Stroud and his wife Elizabeth.  Elizabeth had two daughters from her first marriage, and her and Ben later had another son Marcus in 1897.

Robert Stroud left his parent's home in 1903, at the age of 13.  In 1908 he was living in Cordova, Alaska.  That year he and his 36-year-old girlfriend Kitty O'Brien moved to Juneau. Kitty was a dance-hall entertainer and prostitute.

An acquaintance of their raped and beat Kitty and for that Richard killed him and then turned himself in the the Sheriff.  His mother Elizabeth hired a lawyer, but Robert was sentenced to 12 years at McNeil Island.  In 1912 he was transferred to Leavenworth.
