On [[Apr 24]], 1943, he enlisted or re-enlisted in the Army. Around this same time, Virginia Dell "Ginger" Cassidy was at Tri-State Hospital in Shreveport studying to be a nurse. They were married [[Sep 3]], 1943 in Texarkana, Miller County, Arkansas. He then, in mid-October, went for a tour of duty overseas for World War II. Just after he returned at the end of 1945, he and Virginia went to live in Chicago, Cook County, [[Illinois]] for a short time.

She moved back to her parents house in Hope. They were either preparing to look for a house in Hope, or they were going to move to a house in Chicago (sources vary). It was while he was coming to Hope that he died in a car accident on [[May 17]], 1946 near Sikeston, Scott County, Missouri. He was driving too fast for the conditions, and his car overturned. He was either thrown or got out of his car, and was eventually found hours later, some distance away, drowned in a drainage ditch.
