page 178: George Washington Vaughn
George Washington Vaughn was born in Hancock Co., TN, 1 Oct 1846. He was one of at least
thirteen children born to Samuel N. & Malvina (Church) Vaughan in Hancock Co. Samuel and
Malvina were also born in that county. George's grandparents, John & Nancy (Collicotte)
Vaughan came to what was then Hawkins Co. in 1800 from the state of Virginia. They were all
farmers and lived in Copper Ridge in the Clinch Mountains. The old Vaughan place is now
out of Eidson, TN.
In 1862 George joined the Confederate Army as a private in Company C, Second Tennessee
Cavalry, at War Gap, TN. Later he was transferred to Company F, 16th Battalion. He suffered
stomach and head injuries during the conflict.
At the close of the War, George went to Bourbon Co., KY, for a short time, and about
1867 he moved to Barry Co., MO. He was married there in 1868 to Sarah Caroline Snodgrass,
d/o Anderson and Elizabeth (Hornhart) Snodgrass. During the late 1870s, George and Caroline
moved to Texas and settled near Sherman in Grayson Co., where they lived for 20 years.
In 1901 they moved to Denton Co., TX, where they lived the balance of their lives. George
died in 1920, and Caroline in 1922. Both are buried in the Sanger, TX, Cemetery.
George and his wife raised six children: George W. Jr., Sam H., Bettie Ann, Wiley,
John, & Aubrey. Several of their descendants still live in and around Denton Co., TX.
