Sir John Brett of Romney Marsh, co Kent
John Brett was born about 1558. He purchased Romney in 1599, was an MP and is covered in Hasler's HOP 1558-1603. John Brett married Margaret, daughter of Henry Robinson, a brewer of London. John and Margaret had a son and four daughters (see C142/383/99; PCC admons 1620).
Deborah Brett, who is called one of the co-heiresses of John, married Horatio Eure and by this was the mother of George Eure, 6th Lord Eure. She may be the same person as the "niece Deborah Brett, daughter of my sister Brett", named in the will of Timothy St Nicholas, dated 13 Jun 1606 "aged about 30", proved 17 Sep 1606.
It's possible that the unnamed son of Sir John Brett was also named John Brett and it may be he who married into the St Nicholas family.
In the will of Alice Owen, dated and proven in 1613, she calls her daughter "Brett" and "Sir John Brett" she calls her "son-in-law". Her maiden name was Alice Wilkes, her first husband was Henry Robinson by whom she had six sons and five daughters, one of whom married Sir John Brett of Edmundton, co Mdx. By her second husband William Elkin, esq, alderman of London, she had just one child Ursula, who married Sir Roger Owen of Condover. Lastly Alice married the judge Thomas Owen. She died in 1613 and is buried at Islington.
