This map shows where Argentenay is in France, in related to Ancy-le-Franc

[Edit]
Argentenay is the village where John Menteith was Seigneur at the time of his 1594 marriage contract with Suzanne Hotman, daughter of the then-deceased Francis Hotman.

John and Suzanne had one known child Marie Dorothy de Menteith who was born sometime between 1595 and 1599 in France, possibly in Argentenay.  John died sometime before 1612, as Suzanne married secondly by that year to Antoine d'Ailleboust, seigneur de Collonges.

Dorothy became a lady of honor to the Duchess of Mercoeur where she was living in Paris at the time of her own marriage contract  in Jun 1620 to her step-brother Nicholas d'Ailleboust.

This second map shows where Collognes-la-Madeleine is in relationship to Auxerre and Tonnerre (and thus to Argentenay).

The half-brother of Nicholas, and also the half-brother of Dorothy was that Louis d'Ailleboust who became the 3rd Governor of New France (Quebec) 1648-51.  Louis had come to New France in 1643 to join Maisonneuve's colony at Montreal.

In New France (Quebec), a Freehold was detached from the old Seignory of the Isle of Orleans, and granted in 1652 to Louis d'Ailleboust who named it Argentenay.  He died 31 May 1660 at Montreal.

It's fairly clear that our John de Menteith, must have gotten his claim to Argentenay through some kind of service to the king, possibly as one of the Scottish guard.  In researching this more I find a references to a "Jacques de Montheh, sieur de Fremeville, ensign".  Obviously another Menteith, perhaps even our same guy, maybe this is even him with a slight mistake, James not John.

The third map here shows where Fremeville was (it apparently no longer exists) in relationship to Auxerre.
