Wars tear Britain apart, and the new religion of Christianity is pushing out the old ways. Queen Mab the sorceress decides to create a powerful wizard through her magic, so she creates the baby Merlin. His mother dies at birth, Mab decides to allow Ambrosia, her servant, to rear the child as her own.

Merlin meets a beautiful girl, daughter of a local nobleman and kisses her. She goes on her way, falls into quicksand and he saves her with magic.
Now that he has reached manhood, his magic is making itself known, so he must leave Ambrosia to go to Queen Mab.
He makes his journey first by magical horse, then magical boat to Queen Mab's palace, accompanied at the end by her servant.
